What Type of Teen Was I in High School?

I am sharing a bit of my experience and memories from high school, which might resonate with many of you. My journey was quite unique and filled with both challenges and adventures.

My School Life

Looking back, I had an easy time in high school, but it wasn't always smooth. There were times when I faced bullying in my younger years, and it certainly left its mark on me. I remember being teased and called 'Richie Rich,' a reference to the comic book character, because of my wealthy family and my dirty blonde hair. This experience taught me early on what it feels like to be the target of bullying.

Standing Up for Others

As I grew older, I found myself taking a protective stance. I became a defender of those who were bullied. If I saw someone being picked on, I would intervene, often using physical force to ensure that no one was bullied again. I took up boxing to become better equipped, and it helped me stand my ground. I believed that bullying was a form of cowardice, and facing a bully alone could often reveal their true, vulnerable nature.

Struggles with Learning

Another challenge I faced was in my academic life, particularly in math. Concentration was a significant hurdle for me during my school years. However, with the help of my mother and a doctor, I was diagnosed with a form of ADHD. After starting stimulant medication, my focus improved, and for the first time, I could understand and excel in subjects that had once seemed insurmountable, including math.

Career Goals and Achievements

Despite facing these challenges, I pursued my passion for music early on. At just 15, I was already playing in community clubs and schools, even performing on a TV show that featured local bands. I was part of a band, and my sister Lori would often give me a ride to performances or practice sessions. Having my sisters as teen models and popular students in school certainly gave me a certain level of popularity, though I did not actively seek it out.

Adventures and Choices

One of the best parts of high school for me was my car, a beautiful black Dodge Charger, which allowed me to drive myself. This gave me a sense of independence and freedom. I also found that I could memorize easily, which helped me ace exams. I recall writing a geography exam where I answered each question as soon as I read it, having memorized sections of the book we studied.

Personal Growth and Work Ethic

My high school years were busy, but I managed to achieve good grades with the help of my sisters, who assisted me in math. Unlike some of my peers, I did not follow the traditional path of going to college or joining the family business. Instead, I embraced my musical aspirations wholeheartedly, making money as a drummer from a young age. My dad, who owned car dealerships, supported my dreams, though he had hoped for a different career path for me.

Lessons Learned and Reflections

Looking back, I realize that while my high school years were a mix of challenges and successes, they taught me important life lessons. I learned the value of independence, the importance of following my passions, and the importance of perseverance. School helped me develop skills that I continue to use today, such as reading, writing, and basic math. Though I didn’t pursue higher education, I made solid choices that aligned with my true interests and dreams.

Conclusion

High school was a significant period for me, and while there were days filled with turmoil and struggle, there were also many rewarding experiences. My journey taught me that being true to oneself and following one's dreams can lead to a fulfilling life. As for what type of teen I was in high school, I was a protector, a dreamer, and a teen who found success in his own unique way.
