Weighing the Decision: Should You Leave MBBS?

Weighing the Decision: Should You Leave MBBS?

As a medical student, I’ve often considered the idea of leaving MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) in favor of a shorter, potentially more high-yield course. With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and its rapid advancements, there's an increasing concern about whether our skills might be automated one day. However, reflecting on how fortunate I am to be in medical school, I cannot help but appreciate the unique challenges and opportunities that come with this journey.

God’s Grace and the Struggles of Medical School

Coming from humble beginnings, I often feel grateful for the opportunity to pursue medical education. The fact that I managed to secure a seat is a testament to the kindness of fate. If I had to repeat for a seat, it would have been a bitter pill to swallow.

Initially, every time I saw someone more competent than me, I felt even more incompetent. This feeling of imposter syndrome is prevalent among many medical students, who often doubt their ability to succeed in medical school.

But I’ve learned that imposter syndrome is not unique to me. It is a common phenomenon experienced by many medical students, who struggle with the perception that they are not cut out for the rigorous academic and professional demands of medicine.

The Nature of Medical School

Medical school is not just for geniuses; it is for the determined, hardworking individuals who are willing to put in the effort to learn the vast amount of information required. The course is long and demanding, but as Robert Bruce and the spider story highlights, perseverance and hard work will eventually bear fruit. Success and failure, in the form of passing and failing exams, are part of the journey, and they should not discourage us.

It’s evident that the decision to pursue medical school is not based on intelligence alone. It is a call to action, a dedication to a noble profession. While some outstanding and capable individuals may struggle with the demands of their job, finding themselves unhappy and underappreciated, it is crucial to weigh the pros and cons of such a career path.

Family Guidance and Decision-Making

My parents advised against pursuing MBBS but I made the choice because it felt like a calling. Many of my friends joined the program under pressure from their families, which often makes the journey even more challenging. A career in medicine requires much more than just academic success; it demands a love for the art of medicine and a genuine passion for helping others.

If, like my friends, you are feeling coerced into this path, it might be beneficial to have an open conversation with your parents. Discuss the potential drawbacks of the MBBS program and the advantages of alternative courses that pique your interest. If they remain unconvinced, it’s essential to find a way to embrace the course and discover the joy in the medical profession. The key is to find the art of medicine and become fascinated by it.

Lastly, it’s important to acknowledge that I, too, am merely sharing my perspective. As time goes on, circumstances may change, and we may have to reevaluate our choices. Only time will tell whether I will stick to my decision or reconsider my path.
