Unforgettable College Performances: From Piano to Guitar and Beyond
Introduction
College days are often filled with memorable experiences, and for me, my time as a music major at the university was no exception. With a diverse range of musical talents, from my major instrument, the piano, to my passion for the guitar, I was a regular fixture at various college events. From solo performances to ensemble tours, my experiences were nothing short of unforgettable. In this article, I will share some of the most remarkable stage performances during my college days.
Piano and Guitar Soloist
Before I dive into the specific performances, it's important to note that my major was piano, but I also spent a significant amount of time playing guitar. In those days, one couldn't major in guitar, but I made the most of the opportunity to showcase my skills with the instrument. I was a fixture at numerous college events, from recitals to impromptu performances, and my guitar was an integral part of these experiences.
Chorale Concerts
One of the highlights of my time at college was being chosen for a tenor solo in Chorale concerts. The solo featured a piece by the renowned voice professor, who was also the director of the Chorale. Interestingly, I was the only girl tenor in the choir, and the choice of I Don't Know How to Love Him from Jesus Christ Superstar on Chorale programs was a significant honor. This solo required precision and emotion, and I had to balance it with the director's own voice major students. The experience was both nerve-wracking and incredibly rewarding, and it taught me the importance of adaptability and improvisation.
European Tour
During a European tour with the Women's Ensemble, I had the opportunity to perform solo songs. This tour was not just a cultural exchange but also a chance to showcase my skills to international audiences. In Como, Italy, I was praised by the local newspaper, which described me as 'especially applauded!' although in Italian. European audiences are generally more receptive and appreciative of live performances, which is why the praise meant so much to me.
Choir Part in "Die Fledermaus"
I also got a chance to join the chorus in the opera "Die Fledermaus" for an easy A and just to experience what it's like being part of an opera. The performance was a fun and memorable experience, and it broadened my understanding of the opera world.
Senior Piano Recital
Among all these performances, the most unforgettable was my senior piano recital. The program included works by Mozart, Ravel, and Bartók. Rehearsing for such a recital was nerve-wracking, but the importance of it to my GPA and as a requirement for graduation made it even more significant. Despite the anxiety, I managed to pull it off, albeit not perfectly as I would have wished. The recital was a true test of my skills, and the support I received from the audience, manifested in the flowers I received, was a beautiful gesture that will never be forgotten.
Conclusion
College days are filled with diverse and unforgettable experiences. From solo performances on the piano to playing the guitar with an ensemble, my experiences were not just musical but also personally rewarding. Each performance has left a lasting impression, and the senior piano recital remains the most memorable to this day, no matter the imperfections. These experiences have shaped my musical journey and continue to inspire me to pursue my passion for music.
