Understanding the Nomenclature of the ICAS Program at Manipal: BSc vs. BTech
The Integrated.
ICAS Program and International Practices
ICAS, or the International Campus Admission Scheme, is a unique program that allows students to transfer to international universities for their bachelor’s degree. Since its inception, the program has followed the nomenclature of engineering programs as they exist in many international universities. Most universities in countries such as the USA, Canada, and the UK refer to their engineering programs as BS (Bachelor of Science) or BEng (Bachelor of Engineering).
Curriculum and Degree Variations
The curriculum in the ICAS program is meticulously designed to align with global engineering education standards. This means that the education and training provided are of a high quality and are considered equivalent to what students would receive in top universities around the world. However, the degree that a student receives upon graduation depends entirely on the university they choose to study in.
For students who opt to complete their engineering studies in Manipal, Dubai, or Malaysia, there are different pathways available. Those who choose the 3-year degree offered by MAHE Manipal will receive a BTech (Bachelor of Technology) degree. This degree is recognized in the Indian education system and is highly valued in the job market.
Collaboration and Degree Titles
ICAS offers twinning programs in collaboration with top international universities. These programs are structured in a way that is aligned with the standards of these universities. While some American universities use the term BS (Bachelor of Science) for undergraduate programs, many European universities opt for BSc (Bachelor of Science in Technology/Engineering).
Since MIT Manipal and other partners in the ICAS program cannot issue a BTech and then a BSc, the degree a student receives will mirror the degree naming conventions of the university they attend. This ensures that graduates from the ICAS program are equipped with degrees that are recognized and respected globally.
Goals and Success Rates
Students who participate in the ICAS program have a high chance of gaining admission to top universities such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. However, it is crucial to approach the program with a strategic mindset. The program is designed such that only three semesters count towards overall GPA, and this should guide your academic performance.
Joining the ICAS program for the sake of it should be avoided. The eligibility criteria are set to be rigorous, with a minimum of 60% in 12th grade. Additionally, the cost of the degree is significant, with a minimum cost of 60 lakh. Therefore, it is essential to reflect on your priorities and make an informed decision.
Manipal is an excellent place to spend two years, and the experience is enriched by balancing work and enjoyment. Engaging in extracurricular activities like joining the student council, participating in fests, and staying motivated can make your experience even more valuable. ICAS offers a transformative and rewarding journey, and your success in this program depends on your commitment and strategic approach.
