The Positive Aspects of Atheism in a Belief-Oriented World
As an atheist, I do not choose to be this way; rather, it is what appears to be the truth based on my understanding of the world. This journey has led me to appreciate the benefits that come with a belief in factual accuracy over the acceptance of unfounded beliefs.
Freedom from Magical Fantasy Nonsense
For me, freedom from magical fantasy nonsense is a wonderful way to live. I can appreciate fantasy when I am actively engaging in it, like in films, books, comics, and video games. However, when I return to reality, my mind is not cluttered with the nonsensical ideas and miracles associated with Judeo-Christian beliefs. Why would I want to clutter my mind with imaginary nonsense that one would expect someone to believe in? The simplicity and clarity of reality are invaluable.
Personal Truth and Belief
I approach the topic of theism from a perspective of belief in what I consider to be true. For a typical monotheist, particularly a Christian, it is natural to question the existence of other gods like Thor, Ishtar, Vishnu, or Hermes. However, atheism is merely the absence of belief in these gods, extending the skepticism just one step further. Do you perceive a positive aspect in not believing in these deities? It is not a matter of perceived benefits; rather, it is a belief in the factual accuracy of what we can observe and experience. For instance, the claim that gods do not exist is just as much a fact of the world as the statement that squirrels have bushy tails. Both are claims based on evidence and understanding.
Removing Religious Bias
One might argue that a Christian is free to choose their belief, while an atheist is locked into their disbelief. However, both belief and disbelief are choices based on one's interpretation of the available evidence. The label of 'atheism' signifies a stance of skepticism towards unproven claims. Just as a believer may not take Hindu gods seriously, an atheist is skeptical of the same for similar reasons. It is easy for believers to look down on those who do not share their religious views, but such superiority is a matter of personal bias and not an absolute truth.
Living Truthfully
At the end of the day, the question of belief is deeply personal. A person believes what they do because they think it is true. There are always those who lie and claim to believe when they do not, often to gain perceived benefits like family approval or social acceptance. However, I cannot live a lie. Honesty and truth are paramount to me. The benefits of a particular belief should not be the primary deciding factor in one's faith. Instead, belief should be based on a genuine assessment of what is true and what is not.
In conclusion, the positive aspects of atheism lie in the freedom from unfounded beliefs, the appreciation of factual accuracy, and the commitment to honesty in one's beliefs. These aspects contribute to a clearer, more rational, and more fulfilling way of living in the world.
