The key motivator for many, like myself, is pure curiosity. Discovering unfamiliar ideas and concepts, whether it's a new language or a recipe, is part of what makes the learning process so fulfilling.

Memorable Learning Experience: A College Camping Adventure

The year 1984 was memorable for a group of 26 college students, which included 18 boys and 8 girls, who embarked on an outdoor camping event as part of their curriculum. This experience was not just a one-time event but a structured stay of 2 nights and 3 days in the wilderness of Masinagudi, a small town in Tamil Nadu, India. It was not the first time we had to organize such an event, and it was mandatory for the college. We started setting up the event with a check-in of personal needs, ensuring everyone was ready for the adventure that awaited.

The journey involved a college bus and a 4-wheel drive jeep for traveling between destinations. During the journey, our team maintained a high-energy atmosphere, keeping students engaged with fun conversations and activities. Accommodations were arranged at en route cafeterias, and personal refreshments were allowed. Upon reaching the camping resort midday, students helped set up tents and complete the logistical setup with the help of the in-house chef and another volunteer faculty member.

The event was filled with a variety of activities, from cooking lunch to engaging in jungle trekking guided by local tribes. The learning experience extended beyond the physical journey, with insightful lessons on Mother Nature's balance and the importance of forest safety. After a lively break in Ooty, a nearby hill station, the group returned to the college campus, but not before a delightful cultural exchange around the campfire with songs, dances, and individual talent displays.

The positive impact of this event was not just on the participants but also on our team. Upon debriefing with the head of the department, we received overwhelming appreciation and even a memento from the group. These gestures served to unite our team and bring back cherished memories of the journey. This not only strengthened our team but also reaffirmed the importance of outdoor and experiential learning in nurturing intellectual and social growth.
