The Indispensable Role of NITK E-Cell in the Foundation of Practo

The journey of any successful startup often begins with a nurturing environment and the right support. For Practo, a prominent NITK alumni startup, the significant role of E-Cell, which rebranded itself from EFOREA, cannot be overstated. In this article, we delve into how E-Cell provided the foundation for the success of Practo through mentorship, networking, skill development, and resource access.

Introduction to NITK E-Cell

NITK E-Cell, formerly known as EFOREA, serves as a pivotal hub for fostering entrepreneurial spirit among students at the National Institute of Technology, Karnataka (NITK). As a student initiative aimed at promoting innovation and supporting startups, E-Cell organizes a myriad of activities, workshops, and competitions that equip aspiring entrepreneurs with the resources and network needed to launch their ventures.

The Impact of E-Cell on Practo

The support from E-Cell played a crucial role in the early stages of Practo, which was co-founded by NITK alumni Shashank ND and Abhinav Lal. Here are several ways in which E-Cell contributed to the formation and growth of Practo:

Mentorship and Guidance

E-Cell provided mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs and industry professionals who offered valuable guidance and insights to the founders. This support helped the co-founders navigate the early stages of their startup, providing them with the necessary expertise and direction to make informed decisions.

Networking Opportunities

Through E-Cell, Shashank and Abhinav were able to access a network of entrepreneurs, investors, and mentors. This network was immensely beneficial for potential partnerships and funding opportunities. E-Cell's events and workshops offered them platforms to connect with like-minded individuals and share ideas, helping to build a strong professional network.

Skill Development

E-Cell offers a plethora of workshops and training sessions focused on business development, marketing, and technology. These programs equipped Shashank and Abhinav with essential skills that were crucial for launching and scaling Practo. They learned about product development, market research, and business strategy, which were instrumental in their entrepreneurial journey.

Funding and Resources

E-Cell also facilitated access to funding sources for startups. By leveraging the resources provided by the cell, Practo could secure the necessary funding to get off the ground. Additionally, E-Cell often offers resources such as workspace, equipment, and guidance, which helped the startup to focus on growth and innovation rather than managing initial challenges.

Personal Insights from Shashank ND

Shashank ND, the co-founder of Practo, shared his experience with E-Cell during an interview for NITK’s annual magazine. He reminisced:

In my 2nd year at NITK, I happened to ask a friend who was going to the MSH for the launch of a new club called E-FOREA—basically the college’s Entrepreneurship Cell. My reaction was, “What’s entrepreneurship?” [laughs] But I decided to come along. The presentation they gave was really eye-catching and I decided to apply. Just four of us from our year got selected, and even overall, there were only about 15 people. Through its activities, I came to understand the concept of starting my own company. It was far more interesting to me than most clubs on campus.

Shashank also mentioned that E-Cell's influence extended beyond his initial involvement. He and his co-founder, Abhinav Lal, met at E-FOREA and began their entrepreneurial journey, which led to the creation of Practo.

Conclusion

The story of Practo’s success is a testament to the transformative impact of NITK E-Cell. From mentorship and guidance to networking and skill development, E-Cell provided the essential elements that allowed the co-founders to turn their vision into a thriving startup. For aspiring entrepreneurs at NITK and beyond, E-Cell serves as a beacon of support and inspiration.
