The Harmonicas Melody: A Childhood Music Journey

The Harmonica's Melody: A Childhood Music Journey

In the summer of 1971, I was but a mere eight-year-old, assigned to play the recorder at school. It was a small wooden flute-like instrument, but the task felt monumental. Each week, I carried it home, hoping to master the classic tunes like 'Three Blind Mice' and 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' by the time I returned to class.

The Revelation: A Harmonica and a Hidden Talent

On one frosty Sunday morning, as I burned rubbish in the incinerator, my mother returned from work early. She had been eavesdropping on my clumsy attempts with the recorder. As I quickly jumped up to tend to my chores, she approached me with a kind heart. She laughed and said that I had a hidden talent.

Abruptly, she marched into the house, returning with a bright, shiny harmonica from her pocket. I saw my mother's eyes well up with emotion; she was no longer the stern mother but a young lady who had a childhood talent tucked away. I threw the recorder away and hugged her, begging to learn the harmonica.

My mother promised me that I could keep the instrument if I learned three songs within a week. Despite not starting at 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,' I quickly mastered the two songs set by the school. The third song was the Australian classic 'Waltzing Matilda,' which I learned just in time from my mother before the end of the school holidays.

A Special Performance Revealed Hidden Depths

During a school class, the teacher complimented students who had learned the set songs. When it was my turn, instead of playing the recorder, I dazzled the class by playing the harmonica. The teacher looked both surprised and confused. As she asked me to demonstrate, I pulled out the harmonica, checked its notes, and played 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' and 'Three Blind Mice' with confidence.

Then, nervously, I blurted out that I had learned another song. The class was now fully engaged. The teacher, Mrs. Hope, asked me to play it. To my surprise, she recognized the song as 'Waltzing Matilda.' It turned out Mrs. Hope had immigrated to New Zealand from Australia with her family at age 10, and 'Waltzing Matilda' was a cherished memory shared between mother and daughter. Her passion for the song showed in my performance, and she even gave me a ride home to talk more about music.

This experience not only deepened my bond with my mother but also introduced me to music education beyond the mundane recorder. I attended school with the harmonica and learned the blues after a long period, where I honed the art of bending notes, adding layers of emotion and artistry to my playing.

My journey with the harmonica has been a lifelong love. It taught me the value of persistence and the magic that emerges when a childhood passion meets adult guidance. Today, I still play the harmonica, a testament to that pivotal day when music came to life in the form of a humble, yet powerful, instrument.
