The Evolutionary and Relational Perspectives on Learning Life’s Lessons

Why People Continuously Learn Life's Lessons Through Adversity

Many believe that people intentionally choose to learn life's lessons the hard way, but this is not the case. Instead, it’s the inherent nature of our brains and societal structures that often force us to navigate through difficult situations to gain valuable experiences.

Evolutionary Perspective

From an evolutionary perspective, we can draw parallels between birds and humans. Birds use variability to their advantage, adapting to changing environments and even forming new species. Imagine that the patterns of migration, nesting locations, and wintering sites can all vary year by year, leading to different outcomes for the species as a whole.

In a similar vein, for people, what was true last year or for someone else may not be true for you. Each individual's circumstances, time, and environment are unique. Thus, it behooves society to always have outliers who can explore new worlds, technologies, and ways of thinking. These outliers are vital; they help us discover new niches and grow as a human population. Most people follow the norm, but the existence of those at the extremes ensures that society remains adaptable and innovative.

These outliers are essential for progress, but it is also important to have a large majority of people who go along with the norm. This balance ensures stability and predictability in society.

Relational Perspective

From a relational perspective, it is sad but true that since the Fall, we are broken creatures, and our ability to think clearly about ourselves and others is compromised. Hence, our tendency to learn through hardships is a reflection of our inherent limitations and the myriad challenges we face.

Thankfully, God provides a way out through redemption and transformation. Declarations like Maranatha (Come, Lord) highlight the path of hope and redemption for those who are willing to seek it. In Christian theology, even though God’s path may seem strange, it is ultimately the path of grace and redemption.

Consider people who learn lessons the hard way. Instead of deriding them, it would be wise to reflect on the choices they have and how their experiences contribute to our collective knowledge and understanding. Every story of hardship has a unique lesson to teach, and every individual's journey is a valuable addition to the tapestry of human experience.

By embracing both the evolutionary and relational perspectives, we can better understand why learning through adversity is a common albeit challenging aspect of human existence. Through these diverse viewpoints, we can foster a more empathetic and nuanced understanding of the human condition.
