Students can collaborate with a diverse array of employers, including large corporations, small businesses, and even startups. The emphasis is on finding positions that align with the students' career interests and academic goals, ensuring that each student finds a placement that best suits their aspirations.

The office plays a pivotal role in ensuring that students have a positive and enriching experience.

To be eligible for the Co-op program, students typically need to maintain a minimum GPA and complete specific courses. The real-world work experience gained through the Co-op program can significantly boost a student's resume, making them more competitive in the job market. Additionally, the program helps students establish connections in their industry, which can lead to future job opportunities.

A Work in Progress, but with a Promising Future

While the Co-op program at the Lassonde School of Engineering is still a work in progress, there is a clear and concerted effort to make it an outstanding resource for students. Drawing from the success of the Technology Internship Program (TIP) at York University, the new Lassonde Co-op program is modeled after the Waterloo model, which emphasizes early engagement in co-op experiences starting from the second year of study.

A particular focus of the Lassonde Co-op program is helping students secure placements in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. As an alumnus of York Engineering, I had the privilege of speaking extensively with the individuals spearheading the Lassonde Co-op program and sharing my insights on transitioning to a career in the Bay Area. From my interactions, it is evident that the program has several promising components that will contribute to its success.

Successful Outcomes

Since writing this, there has been remarkable progress in the Lassonde Co-op program. I am aware of at least two undergraduate students who secured placements in Uber's Advanced Technologies Center in Boulder, Colorado, among other impressive opportunities. These success stories are just the beginning, and it is anticipated that more students will benefit from the program's offerings.
