Simplifying Life in a Complex World: A Reflective Journey

Simplifying Life in a Complex World: A Reflective Journey

According to the ancient philosopher, Confucius, life is inherently simple, but humanity insists on making it complex. This paradox is something that we all face in our daily lives. We complicate our existence ‘simply’ by virtue of being human. No other species experiences life in the same way, as instinct does not necessitate the involvement of our intellectually abstract faculties in self-determination.

Why Do We Complicate Life?

We don’t purposefully complicate life; we merely navigate through a chaotic existence with the tools and knowledge (or lack thereof) we have as human beings. It is easier to be an enlightened hermit who has distanced themselves from the outside world, living in a serene and peaceful plot, and proclaiming that life is simple. Yet, we must ask ourselves: how would Confucius advise those in war-torn environments, people living with mental illness, those struggling with PTSD, impoverished individuals, or the terminally ill?

Using our intellect for worthy causes is ideal, but often our brains lead us astray with self-righteousness and selfishness, especially when we believe we know everything. However, some scientists are beginning to recognize that we are indeed part of a harmony with the Earth, rather than masters over it.

Navigating through Life

The compounding factor in modern life is not the presence of technology or knowledge, but the continuous evolution of technology. What was once considered convenient can quickly become complex and even obsolete. This constant evolution of technology renders predecessors obsolete, further fueling the rapid pace of commerce.

For many, life is a series of winces and triumphs. By not caring about grades in high school, I laid the groundwork for five years of struggle in figuring out my life's purpose. Despite being the first in my family to graduate high school, I had no reason to believe that grades would matter, as none of those around me valued them.

As humans, we have existed for hundreds of thousands of years in what we now call primitive and potentially barbarous conditions. However, they also had a level of interconnectedness and harmony with the Earth that today seems like an idealized dream. Our ancestors lived in balance with their environment, adapting to their surroundings and finding their niches. They were stewards of the Earth, not its masters.

Life started becoming complicated when we convinced ourselves that we were not just inhabitants of the Earth but its masters. The convenience and ease brought about by technology come at the cost of mastering new tools and adapting to new systems. Our brains, which are arguably the most advanced among all species, often mislead us into thinking we know it all. However, true wisdom often lies in recognizing our own limitations and adapting to changes.

The key to a simpler life is not the absence of complexity but the ability to manage it. We can strive to create environments and habits that support our well-being and purpose, rather than complicate it. Whether it's through simple living, mindfulness, or understanding the interconnectedness of all things, we can find our own version of simplicity in a complex world.
