Should You Apply to Masters Abroad Now or Wait a Year?

Graduating and considering a masters abroad?

The most common question I get from students is: 'should I wait a year and apply once I've completed a successful internship, or can I apply now with a more focused GRE preparation?'

GRE Preparation in a Month

While a month's time is good for GRE preparation, the key is to examine your aspirations. If you're eyeing top-tier programs from prestigious universities, the time might not be sufficient. However, if your target schools are a bit lower in the rankings, you might find it viable.

Internships and Admissions

You don't absolutely need an internship to secure a spot in a US university; it's more about the experiences and how they complement your academic profile. These experiences can indeed shape your motivation and application, but they are not a strict requirement.

My advice is to look at the next possible intake: May 2023 or possibly the Fall 2023 intake. While there’s no inherent problem with applying now, keep in mind that a year of experience could certainly add value to your application.

In-Depth Research and Plan

Starting a year to 1.5 years in advance is the optimal plan. GRE experts suggest that the ideal timing to take the GRE is 60 to 90 days before your first application deadline, which provides a sufficient buffer for last-minute adjustments.

Do thorough research, start your preparations early, and take all necessary steps now to ensure you're in the best position come application time.

Additional Tips

Consider applying another year later, with a year of work experience under your belt. It could make your application more robust and increase your chances of acceptance.

Your GRE can be prepared in a month if you have a clear foundational understanding, and you can attempt the exam to evaluate your preparation level.
