Scores from the 2020 AP Exams: A Comprehensive Analysis
As the dust settles from the 2020 Advanced Placement (AP) exams, it is time to take a look at the results and reflect on the journey that led to these scores. Here is a detailed account of the performances across various AP subjects.
Computer Science A
Score: 5
The AP Computer Science A exam was a breeze compared to many other subjects. My consistent attendance in class, combined with regular coding activities, laid a solid foundation. Unlike some other classes that required group projects, I preferred working solo. The class required minimal homework, as most assignments were completed in class. As the exam date approached in May, I spent several weeks practicing past free response questions (FRQs) from 2010 to 2018, available on the CollegeBoard website.
AP Seminar
Score: 5
This course was an unexpected delight, guiding me to a perfect score of 5. The writing skills learned were extensive, and the few challenges I faced in lectures were more than made up for by the detailed rubrics and high-scoring sample papers. Examining these papers helped me structure my arguments more effectively, leading to a successful outcome. This score was particularly remarkable, given that 6.4% of the AP Seminar students achieved this result.
AP World History: Modern
Score: 4
Unfortunately, this class was quite challenging, with significant homework loads on weekends and long school days. The content was dense, and time management was crucial. Despite not fully grasping every concept, the modified exam due to the pandemic may have contributed to my 4. The class had a heavy workload, but the effort put in likely helped with the score.
Other AP Exam Scores and Reflections
AP Calculus AB
Score: 5
These exams certainly were not a true measure of my abilities and strengths. This 5 was a focused effort, with exam preparation involving every available resource. The class was manageable, and I felt comfortable with the material.
AP US History
Score: 4
While I was confident in the DBQ and LEQs, my 4 reflects a need for more depth in my analysis. Manifest Destiny was a strong topic, but the obscure documents made for a challenging DBQ. The 4 scored well, and I am satisfied with the outcome.
AP Physics 1
Score: 3
Physics presented significant challenges, with only minor success in this course. Despite hours of study and high GPA, I struggled with the concepts. Question 2 from the exam was particularly difficult, leading to a 3. Still, passing the exam was a relief after spending so much time preparing.
AP English Language and Composition
Score: 5
This exam felt relieving rather than a surprise, thanks to months of focused writing practice, particularly in rhetorical analysis essays. My teacher’s confident prediction and my passion for writing played a significant role in achieving this score.
AP Chemistry
Score: 4
The exam was under high stress, as I meticulously followed study guides and YouTube videos. This 4 was a solid result, but I was hopeful for a 5. Chemistry being my weaker subject was reflected in the score.
Overall Reflections
I am generally pleased with the results, which were in line with expectations. The scores reflect a mix of effort and preparedness. While the exams should not be seen as a measure of intelligence, they did provide a good assessment of what I had learned in each subject. Brass tacks, I am content with my preparation and performance, particularly in subjects that mattered most to me.
Remember, these scores are but one part of the larger academic journey. Revel in them for a while, reflect on your hard work, and enjoy your well-deserved summer break!
