Review of the Computer Science Department at ICFAI University Ranchi
ICFAI University, known for its network of 11 universities across India, is diversifying its academic offerings in various fields. My personal experience and perspective are based on my studies in the Computer Science (CS) department at ICFAI University Ranchi, more specifically, on the BCA program. This review encompasses my firsthand observations and concerns regarding the current academic and infrastructural landscape of the institution.
The Disheartening Current Scenario
The recent declines in academic standards and a noticeable reduction in the number of faculty members at ICFAI University Ranchi have created a disheartening learning environment. The focus on mere attendance rather than genuine academic engagement is a significant concern. The CS department, in particular, requires at least 8 new faculty members to address the current academic shortfall. This lack of faculty not only hampers the quality of education but also impacts the overall learning experience of the students.
Colleges and Infrastructure Issues
My dissatisfaction with ICFAI University Ranchi is further amplified by the subpar college infrastructure. The projectors in classrooms are in such poor condition that they are nearly non-functional, making it challenging for students to follow lessons effectively. Additionally, the condition of the toilets and old classrooms is abysmal. Room 201 has a persistent foul smell and lacks regular cleaning. Despite the addition of some new classrooms, the overall setup necessitates significant improvements in maintenance and modernization. The absence of smart boards and the poor WiFi coverage on the top floor further contribute to the suboptimal learning experience.
Academic Quality and Faculty Issues
The academic quality at ICFAI University Ranchi is severely compromised. The Faculty of Information Technology (IT), for example, is particularly underwhelming due to a chronic lack of faculty. One teacher attempts to cover multiple courses despite having limited knowledge, resulting in poor teaching quality. In addition to the dearth of knowledgeable instructors, attendance and exam policies are overly strict, with fees and fines imposed for non-attendance. This approach creates a punitive environment rather than a supportive learning atmosphere.
Value-for-Money Concerns
The cost-benefit analysis of studying at ICFAI University Ranchi is questionable, especially considering the quality of education and facilities provided. The annual course cost is not justified by the quality of education and resources available. If campus placement opportunities are not promising, it is advisable to consider enrolling in a government university like Marwari College Ranchi, which offers a more value-for-money experience.
For prospective students, it is imperative to thoroughly research the institution's reputation, faculty expertise, and overall academic standards before making a decision. A well-rounded and supportive academic environment is crucial for academic and personal growth, and ICFAI University Ranchi, in its current state, fails to provide that.
