Reflections on My Academic Preferences: Favorite and Least Favorite Subjects
My academic journey has been a mix of love and challenges. Having a background in Commerce, I have found certain subjects to be my favored companions. My journey through high school and college has presented an enriching spectrum of subjects, from accounting and economics to legal studies and physical education. This article delves into the subjects I excelled in and those that posed a challenge.
The Top Choices: Accounts and Economics
My preference for studying within the Commerce background has always been deeply rooted in my passion for accounting. Accounting has always been the bedrock of my academic endeavors. It is a subject that had always functioned as my savior, from excelling in the Commerce Olympiad in school to scoring exemptions in CA-IPCC level. I owe much of my success to my 12th-grade tutor, Harvinder Singh Sir, and the esteemed Accounts guru, CA Parveen Sharma Sir, who infused me with a clear understanding of the subject.
Second on my list is cost and financial management (FM) economics. This subject holds a special place due to its complexity but the reward for understanding its intricacies is significant. My journey in this subject has been made possible with the guidance of some outstanding teachers who have helped me grasp the difficulties.
Economics, another subject I adore, has seen some remarkable transformations. Being fortunate to have discovered some brilliant teachers who made the subject more approachable, it brought a sense of understanding and eagerness to learn during both school and college.
Laws and Business: Interesting but Vast
The subject of laws, including business, corporate, and taxation, is a vast and fascinating area. While I find it interesting, it is also very vast, making it a challenging yet addictive subject. This area offers a wealth of knowledge that is both theoretical and practical.
One of the most puzzling subjects was business and management, which, although theoretically interesting, can be quite boring while studying. However, when it comes to practical application, it can be incredibly intriguing.
The Least Adborable Theoretical Concepts in Business/Management
Beyond these favorite subjects, there are a few key areas that I found to be less than ideal. The most hated subject was the theoretical concepts in business and management, often referred to as a 'kitaab kholte hi acchi neend aa jaati hai' experience. It is plain and simple when one opens the textbook and drifts off to sleep right away. Studying these concepts can sometimes be a daunting task.
My High School Experiences
In high school, I found that the subject of geography was particularly challenging. It was a torturous experience, likely due to its complex and abstract nature.
Spanish: Learning for the Love of It
One of the subjects I am most passionate about in my spare time is Spanish. I truly want to learn this language and understand its nuances. Despite the heavy focus on grammar, I find the learning process worthwhile. The teacher is very approachable and enjoyable to learn from, and who among us wouldn't appreciate a good teacher enriching our knowledge?
Least Favorite: Physical Education (PE) Class
Physical Education (PE) was certainly the least favorite subject in high school. The problem isn't with sports, as I deeply love track and field and cross-country. However, the class frequently causes issues, with multiple students needing to visit the nurse's office due to accidents or other incidents.
One memorable incident involved dodgeball. During a game in the PE class, the most athletic students were grouped together, while the rest of us were on the other team. After about five minutes, only five of us were left, with the athletic team still actively playing. The teacher then implemented a rule that allowed the athletic team to get close to us and try to eliminate us. After a few minutes, the team that was left with me was defeated, and the teacher decided to end the game. Unfortunately, just as she did so, someone threw the dodgeball at my head, and I ended up in the nurse's office.
Among the four core subjects—English, Social Studies, Math, and Science—my favorite subjects are English and Social Studies. The teachers in these classes are very personable and make learning a fun, engaging experience. My Social Studies teacher even provides mental health moments in class, which has been a ray of sunshine in an otherwise demanding academic setting.
When it comes to math and science, the preferences are quite divided. Math, especially algebra, has become my nemesis in the morning. My high school started me in algebra with a small class, but the subject has always been a difficult task to understand. It would be much easier if the teacher could make math fun and engaging, rather than leaving students in a state of confusion.
Overall, my academic journey has been a blend of rewarding and challenging phases. While some subjects have been my go-to favorites, others have been like a hurdle that needed to be overcome. Regardless, the journey continues, and I am always eager to discover new areas of learning and personal growth.
