Reflecting on High School: Advice to My Younger Self
If you could go back to the first year in high school, what would you say to yourself?
In the early years of high school, we often face challenges and make decisions that shape our future. Looking back, it's clear that certain actions and attitudes can make a significant impact on our growth and success.
Embrace Your Passion
Truly commit yourself to something. For me, it was music. Learning an instrument requires dedication and time. It took me around 10,000 hours to become proficient enough to play with others. While there are no guarantees, focusing on your passion can bring both joy and success.
Avoid Harmful Habits
During those initial days of high school, it's easy to fall into bad habits like smoking cigarettes which can become costly and harmful over time. If I could go back to the day I first started high school, I would advise my younger self to avoid these pitfalls. Twenty years later, cigarettes cost me 40 per pack, and I could have had an Italian sports car by now.
Build Strong Relationships
Building a supportive social network is crucial. I would tell my younger self to form strong friendships and maintain them. A new environment and a uniform might seem daunting, but these will soon become your friends. Don’t wait; start talking to your classmates now. Reach out to Chase and Paige, who may be drifting away or developing health issues. Be there for each other through the tough times.
Trust Your Instincts
Follow your gut feelings. You have the potential to do great things, and you may not realize it at the time. Believe in yourself and the choices you make. Trust your instincts, whether they lead to great achievements or just doing your best.
Focus on Your Future
As a junior in high school with a GPA of 3.28, I would advise my younger self to worry less about making rebellious decisions and more about academic success. Strive to make the best possible grades. Don't let personal issues or adversities hinder your education. Work hard, aim for college, and fulfill your dream of becoming a nurse. Marriage and children are not top priorities, and your education is temporary, completing it by 23.
Reflect on past experiences and use them to guide your future. Each decision, no matter how small, shapes who you are today.
