Proving Ones Mettle: Personal Insights on Obtaining a GATE Rank Below 100

How Does It Feel Getting a Rank Below 100 in GATE?

Achieving a rank below 100 in the GATE Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is typically seen as a significant accomplishment. Here are some feelings and thoughts that candidates might experience after securing such a rank.

Pride and Achievement

Many candidates feel a sense of pride and satisfaction as a rank below 100 indicates a strong understanding of the subject matter and excellent preparation. This accomplishment reflects the hard work and dedication of the candidate, indicating their comprehensive knowledge of engineering principles.

Opportunities

A high GATE rank opens up numerous opportunities for further studies such as admission to prestigious postgraduate programs at IITs, NITs, and other top institutions. Additionally, it can enhance job prospects in public sector undertakings (PSUs) that consider GATE scores for hiring.

Validation of Hard Work

Candidates often feel that their hard work and preparation have paid off, providing validation for the time and effort invested in studying. This sense of accomplishment is a form of personal recognition that encourages them to continue striving for excellence in their academic and professional lives.

Pressure and Expectations

While a rank below 100 is commendable, it can also create pressure to maintain or exceed this level in future endeavors, whether in further studies or professional settings. This pressure often stems from the expectations placed on students and professionals to continuously strive for higher achievements.

Recognition

Such a rank is often recognized and respected within academic and professional circles, leading to potential networking and collaboration opportunities. This recognition can open doors to various academic, professional, and networking-oriented activities that can enhance a candidate's career trajectory.

Personal Reflection: My GATE Journey

Nice question. Thanks for reminding me of 13th March 2020, the day when the results were declared. I got to know about the highest marks scored in my department that same afternoon, and it was 83. After that, I had a panic attack as it was almost equal to last year's score of AIR-1. I thought what if the cut-off remains as high as it was last year? The cut-off for Metallurgy in 2019 was 53.5, and I wouldn't get AIR under 50. In this department, anything after AIR-50 can put you in the frame of doubt as seats are very few. So, at any cost, I needed under 50.

That evening, at around 6 p.m., I opened the official website of GATE for what felt like the tenth time to check whether the results were out or not. This time it showed “GATE-2020 results declared.” Click here.

I got the adrenaline rush and could hear all my heartbeats clearly. I clicked, entered my Email address and Password. The result was there on my laptop screen. Only credentials were visible at first, I scrolled down, and the number next to All India Rank in this paper was mentioned as 35.

I just can't explain my feeling in words what I felt at that very moment; it was just surreal! Mark my words very few times in your life you will feel victorious like you've achieved something; something big! It doesn’t happen everyday; it comes occasionally. This was one such moment of victory for me and the end of failures of last two attempts, end of agony, and a beginning of something new and beautiful. I will never ever forget that day! It will always remain with me, no matter how good I end up using this rank or not.

To the aspirants of GATE-2021 from different departments, all the very best! Many of you may feel like a struggler at present, but always remember you can do it!

PS: I got Materials Engineering at IISc Bangalore in the first round of COAP on 10th June, Category: Gen. Thanks!
