Passionate Pursuit: How a Love for Numbers Shapes a Math Teacher’s Vocation

For as long as I can remember, I have been captivated by the world of numbers. There's something inherently satisfying about solving equations, deciphering complex problems, and uncovering hidden patterns. My journey as a math teacher is deeply rooted in this passion, and it all began when I discovered the joy of creating stories with my students' names and interests, turning numbers into engaging, relatable stories that made math fun and accessible.

The Path to Passion

Teaching became a natural extension of my love for numbers. When I look back, what motivated me to become a math teacher was my belief that numbers could not only inspire but also empower. Over the years, my students' smiles and successes were a testament to this belief. It's astonishing to think that even 20 years later, I still hear from students, reminiscing about their time in my classes. This constant feedback is a reminder of the profound impact that teaching can have.

Personal Growth and Professional Challenges

Despite the sense of fulfillment I found in teaching, it wasn't always an easy journey. What made me reconsider teaching at a prestigious school was the realization that I might not have the extroverted personality typical of a primary or secondary school educator. My role as a private math tutor and my experience at a university in South Africa have shown me the importance of addressing the unique challenges faced by underprivileged students.

Challenges in Education

While I have a solid background in both primary and secondary education, I've noticed a significant disparity in educational outcomes, particularly among Black girls in South Africa. The majority of these brilliant students drop out of high school due to unemployment and the perception that completing school is not necessary for a decent life. This stark reality, coupled with alarmingly high dropout rates, catalyzed my desire to help and support those who choose to continue their schooling. Math, in particular, is the biggest challenge for many of these students, which is why I focus my efforts on tutoring primary and high school students.

Homecoming and Retrenchment

Three years ago, I decided to return to university, but I was disqualified from a master's program in mathematics due to academic challenges. This setback did not deter me from my goal. Instead, it reaffirmed my commitment to supporting those who find math daunting. I now diligently tutor students, knowing that every small drop of effort can make a significant difference, much like a titration process in chemistry.

Empowering the Next Generation

My journey is as much about the numbers as it is about making a meaningful impact. Teaching, in my experience, requires not just knowledge but also the ability to connect with students on a personal level. It is about creating an environment where students feel seen, heard, and valued. This is why I focus on making math fun and accessible, rather than merely presenting it as a collection of abstract concepts. My role as math tutor is about more than just imparting knowledge; it's about inspiring young minds to see the world through the lens of numbers.

A Call to Action

The adage that 'all that is necessary for a situation to go from bad to worse is for capable people to do nothing' resonates deeply with me. Education is a powerful tool for social change, and it is incumbent upon us to ensure that every student, regardless of background, has the opportunity to succeed. By continuing to tutor and share my passion for numbers, I hope to make a small but significant difference in the lives of many.
