Optimizing Study Time for IIT and GATE Prep: Personal Insights from Rahul Srinivas

Understanding the IIT and GATE Journey: Effective Time Management Insights

How many hours did you study during your preparation for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and Computer Science (CS) exams, specifically the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)? My personal experience sheds light on the rigorous study regime required to succeed in these competitive exams.

Studying in the Aakash Institute AESL and A Transition to IIT Madras

My journey began in the Aakash Institute AESL during my 11th to 12th grades, including my preparatory year. Despite coming from an ordinary school with no competitive exam preparation, I didn’t give up, and I’m currently studying at IIT Madras, where I’m now in the perfect position to share my insights.

Classroom Timing and Commuting

The academic schedule at the Aakash Institute was from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. After classes, it took about an hour to reach home, making my evening routine crucial for preparation. By 5:30 PM, I would freshen up, have dinner, and dive into study mode by 6:30 PM.

Weekday Study Routine

On weekdays, I allocated two hours daily for each subject, totaling six hours. These hours were dedicated to revising what was taught in class and solving multiple-choice questions (MCQs). If I couldn't solve a question, I immediately went to the lecturer the next day to clarify my doubts. While six hours might sound insufficient, my system ensured efficient learning, aided by the importance of weekends.

Weekend Revision Strategy

Weekends were when I put in extra effort by studying nine hours in total. I would allocate one hour to each subject for revision and two hours for solving questions. It was crucial to maintain a balance and take short breaks every hour. My circadian rhythm was essential, and sleeping from 1 PM to 8 AM was vital for the next day.

Personal Dedication and Consistency

My study routine in the preparatory year and during high school continued, helping me secure a seat at IIT Madras. Consistency and hard work, combined with smart strategies, are the keys to success in these competitive exams. Lack of preparation due to the pandemic affected my performance, but I believe with the right approach, you can achieve your goals.

Experience and Reflection

Despite the challenges, I strongly recommend following this study schedule to improve your GATE and IIT exam performance. If you sustained the effort, you would likely achieve better results. My dream of being an aerospace engineer was affected by the pandemic, but I'm hopeful about the future. Best of luck!
