Nostalgic Songs for Childhood: Singing and Reading with My Sons
Looking back, it's surprising how quickly the memories of the early days with my sons blend into one big, beautiful blur. Despite that, there are a few songs that still bring me back to those precious moments. While I never sang them themselves, my beloved wife would often recite They Would Remember Me by Don McLean, and our youngest son would continue to sing Doo Wah Diddy Diddy by Manfred Mann, a tradition he started in his father's memory.
Nostalgia for the Beats: Rocky Racoon and Please Mr. Custer
Let's talk about the songs my sons and I enjoyed together. One of the most enduring memories is Rocky Racoon by the Beatles. It always conjured up images of them running around in a field, chasing each other and calling me to join in. Another song that brought a smile to their faces was Please Mr. Custer by Ray Stevens. I remember it being a fun song to say enthusiasticly during play time, complete with hand gestures and silly faces.
The Missing Dad: The Cats in the Cradle
The song The Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin was a point of reflection for me. As a professional drummer, I was often away from home, touring, practising, or playing with my band. This absence was challenging, and I would perform the song thoughtfully later in life. I once said to my boys, now grown men, 'if you can listen to that song without feeling sadness or remorse, you've done a wonderful job being a father.'
Reading and Singing Together: A Joyful Bond
One of the best parts of our time together was reading bedtime stories. I always made an effort to change my voice and add different tones to the characters, inspired by Rich Little. Reading The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham made us all laugh, but it was my rendition of Goodnight from The Beatles' White Album that sealed their love for bedtime. As they fell asleep with a smile on their faces, they also took away a piece of me and our bond.
Reflecting on Our Memories
It's been years now, and recalling those times fills me with a mix of joy and nostalgia. I recently sent them a video compilation of these memories, hoping it brings back some of the warmth and happiness of those days. Even today, we hug and kiss whenever we see each other, cherishing every moment we share.
As a father, one of the most memorable ways to connect with your children is through songs and bedtime stories. Whether it's through Gigliotti's treasured childhood songs or a new tradition, these moments are invaluable.
