Initial Challenges and Early Struggles
Initially, Smita had a promising start in her educational journey. In January 2020, she scored a 91.62%ile and around 85 marks. Although the lockdown interrupted her preparation, her efforts paid off as she managed to improve her marks to 122 in September, earning a 91.54%ile. However, her performance in the mock tests, where she consistently scored around 150, raised her hope of a higher percentile than her actual score in the JEE Mains.
Despite her parents' disapproval of taking a full drop, Smita chose to pursue a Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) degree in a private college in West Bengal, achieving a WB JEE rank of 4667. Her JEE Mains February attempt in 2021 was less successful, with a dismal 98.05%ile and a score of -175, leading her to leave the college and intensify her preparation for the March 2021 attempt.
The March 2021 JEE Mains and Beyond
When the JEE Mains exam day arrived on March 18, Smita felt unusually confident. Even though the paper was easy, her expectations ran high, leading her to predict an exceptional performance. Unfortunately, normalization impacted her score significantly, reducing her percentile to 96.86 despite scoring 203 marks. This experience taught her the value of consistency and the unpredictable nature of the JEE Mains.
Smita's journey is a testament to the importance of resilience in the face of disappointment. She acknowledges her past mistakes and the regret of not managing her time effectively. However, she remains optimistic and determined to secure a better future.
