Lessons Learned from Kindergarten to Junior High: How Adversity Shaped Me

Growing up in a diverse educational environment, I faced challenges that tested my resolve and refined my character. My experiences in kindergarten, elementary, and junior high provided invaluable lessons that continue to shape me into the person I am today.

Kindergarten: Navigating Through Racism

In kindergarten, I was the only Asian child in my class. As an introverted and shy individual, I became an easy target for discrimination. The racial bias I encountered even at such a young age saddened me deeply. This early exposure to racism has profoundly influenced my worldview and empathy towards others.

Despite my feelings, I believe in judging people not by their race or ethnicity but by who they are as individuals. When a coworker of mine experienced racism, I could relate to her pain. This experience has fostered a strong sense of empathy within me, especially towards those who face discrimination and prejudice.

Montessori Primary: A Diverse and Inclusive Environment

During the apartheid era, I attended a Montessori Primary school that was multi-racial. This environment was crucial in shaping my perspective on the world. While I cannot pinpoint a specific incident that stood out, the cumulative effect of the kindness shown to me during my formative years has contributed to my overall character.

Empathy and Kindness

The overwhelming kindness I experienced in school has made me a more empathetic and compassionate person. Witnessing other students being humiliated or picked on has taught me to stand up for those who cannot defend themselves. Life is already challenging enough for everyone, and we should strive to be kinder and help those less fortunate. A kinder world would be better for everyone.

Personal Adversity and Overcoming Adversity

Growing up in a poor and dysfunctional household has presented numerous challenges. Despite these obstacles, education has always been a source of solace and hope for me. My family's financial hardship meant that I relied on textbooks loaned from school during my grade school years.

When I started junior high, my outlook began to change. While initially struggling to focus on academics, I became motivated to enjoy studying and would spend weekends in the library to learn more. This shift in mindset culminated in excellent performance in local and UK technical exams, which led to a scholarship to study BSc Computer Science in London in 1982.

My academic and professional journey took me to various countries, including the USA, Australia, Singapore, and Thailand. I spent my entire career working in these regions. After a distinguished career, I retired at the age of 53 in 2014, finding a sense of fulfillment in my achievements and personal growth.

In conclusion, my experiences in kindergarten, elementary, and junior high have ingrained values such as empathy, honesty, and resilience within me. While I faced adversity, these challenges have shaped me into a better person capable of navigating life's complex and often challenging situations with kindness and integrity.
