About JIPMER
Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) under the Government of India since 1956, is one of the leading medical institutions in the country. Spread over a sprawling 192.2 acres campus in an urban locale of Puducherry, formerly Pondicherry, JIPMER is 170 kilometers by road from Chennai. JIPMER has been declared as an Institution of National Importance by a Parliamentary Act, the JIPMER Puducherry Act 2008, which was gazetted on 14-7-2008.
Mission and Objectives
JIPMER conducts Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) medical training through its working hospital, JIPMER Hospital, which has 1500 beds. M.B.B.S, M.D, and M.S degree courses are offered in 32 different disciplines. Super speciality departments like Cardiology, Neurology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Neonatology, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pharmacology, Clinical Haematology, and Surgical Gastroenterology also offer courses. Fellowship courses are available in four disciplines. Full-time Ph.D. programs are available in six disciplines. JIPMER aims to provide a high-quality learning environment for students pursuing degrees awarded by it. Teaching and training for M.B.B.S. are focused on health improvement, disease prevention, and cure as well as fundamental understanding. All medical graduates must meet the core outcomes set by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
