Is a One-Year Master's Degree in the UK Eligible for a Post-Graduate Work Visa?
The UK's one-year master's program, like any other eligible undergraduate or graduate degree, is indeed eligible for a post-study work visa known as the Graduate Route, effective July 1, 2021.
Eligibility: From Student to Graduate Visa
International students who have successfully completed a master's program or any other higher education course at a UK higher education provider can apply for the Graduate Route visa. This visa allows you to stay in the UK for up to two years after your studies (for undergraduate or master's degree holders) or three years for PhD graduates.
Importance of Compliance and Documentation
To qualify, you must have a valid student visa at the time of application and must have completed an eligible course at a UK higher education provider with a proven track record of compliance. Holding the required documentation, such as your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for your latest Student or Tier 4 visa application, is crucial.
Application Process and Requirements
The Graduate Route involves a new visa application, but it's important to note that you must be inside the UK to apply. The application process includes:
Payment of a visa fee of £700 Payment of the full rate of £624 per year for the Immigration Health Surcharge Provision of your CAS number associated with your most recent Student or Tier 4 visa applicationConsidering Delayed or Online Studies
Even if you have studied online due to the global pandemic, you can still apply for the Graduate Route as long as you meet the other eligibility criteria. Here is what you need to consider:
Online Studies from 2020-2021: If you began a program of 12 months or less in 2020 or 2021 via distance learning and have not previously entered the UK to study it, you can apply as long as you have a successful student visa application in place and arrive in the UK before your student visa ends or by September 27, 2021, whichever comes sooner. Previously Traveled to the UK: If you have existing permission as a Student to study and you have already traveled to the UK during that period, you can apply if you are present in the UK before the end date of your permission. Long-Course Sponsors: Students who received sponsorship for a course of more than 12 months and engaged in distance learning from January 24, 2020, to September 27, 2021, will also remain eligible for the Graduate Route.Understanding the Benefits and Constraints
The Graduate Route offers significant benefits, such as the ability to work or look for work in the UK at any skill level. However, it is essential to note that successful applicants can only switch into skilled work after finding a suitable job. This means that while working or searching for a job, you must be within the UK.
