Hi! I actually did H2 English Literature without reading Literature for my ‘O’ Levels. I also had a B3 for English for my ‘O’ Levels, so I think I can provide a constructive answer to your question.

I would say ‘yes’ but you must be prepared for a lot of struggle and hard work unless you are brilliant, which I am not!

Frankly, there will be a steep learning curve. From my experience, my first few H2 English Literature examination grades were below average, i.e., 13–15 / 25. I was not the only one in this; in fact, almost half of my class received that grade, even though many read English Literature for ‘O’ Level. The main problem, I think, was our writing style - we did not know how to write well and critique poems/prose with sophistication.

The level of sophistication and lack of nuanced understanding of western cultures put many of us at a disadvantage, especially for the elective paper, as the texts were mainly from British/American writers. Many of us could not relate to the work. Consequently, many Singaporean neighbourhood school kids like myself could not grapple with the cultural issues, the historical significance of events shaping the texts, and the level of sophistication required to reproduce critiques that are strong and well-informed.

Personally, I struggled a lot throughout the two years. Although I did achieve an ‘A’ in the end, I attribute a large portion of it to hard work and a small portion to luck.
