IIT Madras’ Online Bachelor’s Degree in Programming and Data Science: Worth the Investment?

The title of an IITian is one of the most distinguished titles bestowed to any Indian student. From IIT Bombay to IIT Madras, all of the campuses are recognized for their outstanding educational backgrounds, placements, and stature. Thousands of students compete for a handful of seats and only the best are chosen. As a result of being selected as an IITian, these students receive the best infrastructure, professors, facilities, placement opportunities, and packages.

However, most people assume that IITs are solely for engineering students. Thus, it comes as a surprise to learn that they offer a wide range of degrees, including , , MA, and even Ph.D. Recently, IIT Madras has launched a new in Programming and Data Science, the first of its kind in the history of IITs, keeping in mind the growing need for data science as a job requirement. This course is built on an online teaching framework, though the exams are flexible and can be taken at various IIT Madras-affiliated centers.

Eligibility Criteria and Structure

To join the IIT Madras in Programming and Data Science online course, students must meet the following criteria:

10th grade: Studied Mathematics and English 12th grade or equivalent: A pass in 12th or its equivalent Bachelor’s degree program enrollment or completion: Currently enrolled or have completed a bachelor's degree or have dropped out of a bachelor's degree program

There are three tiers in the programme:

Foundational Course: Includes Mathematics, Statistics, Basics of Programming and Python, and English Diploma in Programming and Data Science: 1-3 years, 10 hours per course per week B. Sc Degree in Programming and Data Science: 1-3 years, 10 hours per course per week

Upon completion of any tier, students will receive certificates. The fees structure for each tier is as follows:

Foundational Course: Rs. 32,000 (1-3 years, 10 hours per course per week) Diploma Courses: Rs. 55,000 each (1-3 years, 10 hours per course per week) - Total Rs. 110,000 Degree Course: Rs. 100,000 (1-3 years, 10 hours per course per week)

Disadvantages of the Online Mode

While the programme seems promising, there are several disadvantages to consider:

Course Hierarchy: The course structure and slow advancement can make the entire procedure lengthy and tedious. Fees Structure: The fees are segregated, making the overall cost significantly higher than other online courses with comparable or superior results. Platforms like UpGrad, SkillSlash, and Grockit offer similar or better courses at a more reasonable price range. Examination Process: The exams are held offline and in selected centers, which can make the learning process uneven and stressful.

Alternatives and Options

There are several other online platforms that offer similar courses with simpler and more organized functionality and lower fees. They provide inexpensive courses costing Rs. 89,000 for professionals and Rs. 35,000 for freshers.
