Exploring the Scope and Prospects of DPT for Girls in Pakistan
Teaching undergraduate students of DPT (Doctor of Physiotherapy) for approximately four years has provided me with valuable insights into the career paths of young physiotherapists. The majority of my students, who are predominantly girls, face similar challenges, with limited job opportunities that often come with lower salaries. This has prompted many of them to pursue further education, hoping for better career prospects. However, the field of physiotherapy remains a rewarding one, especially in the context of Pakistan, where health care services are crucial.
The Current Job Market
Upon completing their DPT degrees, many of my students faced dire job market realities. The maximum monthly salaries offered were around 30-35,000 Pakistani Rupees, which is considered quite low. Some opted to pursue postgraduate degrees in the hopes of securing better-paying jobs. For those who chose to work directly, the scenario is quite different for boys. They often moved towards home-visit services and private patient consultations, which are more lucrative but come at the cost of mobility and expenses.
Consequences of Choosing the 'Dr' Prefix
While it might seem attractive to add the prefix 'Dr.' to one's name for a better marriage proposal, this should be avoided. Not only is it a waste of a potential opportunity for a deserving candidate, but it also does not align with the true spirit of the profession. In Pakistan, many people still view MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) doctors as the 'real doctors,' which can backfire if this choice is made purely for such personal gains.
The Importance of DPT in Pakistan
Despite the challenges, the outlook for DPT in Pakistan is promising, particularly given the growing healthcare needs of the population. The need for physiotherapists has become more pronounced post-surgical rehabilitation, especially post-natal care for women.
Total body rehabilitation is crucial, and this applies equally to both men and women. Post-surgical recovery and postnatal care are two critical areas where DPT professionals play a vital role. The demand for female physiotherapists is on the rise, and this is a testament to the growing recognition of physiotherapeutic services.
Why DPT is a Good Profession for Girls
Physiotherapy, like becoming a doctor (MBBS), is a noble profession that serves the country and its people. It is essential in today's healthcare landscape, where preventive measures and quick recovery are paramount.
In contrast to Western countries, where the awareness of DPT professionals is high, Pakistan still relies on basic home remedies and lacks comprehensive physiotherapy services. This presents a unique opportunity for those pursuing DPT to make a significant impact.
Conclusion
The decision to enter the field of DPT is a personal one, and should be made based on the individual's interest and passion. For those who choose to pursue this path, the future is bright. The field of physiotherapy in Pakistan is set to grow, and the role of female physiotherapists is becoming increasingly important. While there may be challenges, the rewards of serving one's community and ensuring better health outcomes make it a worthwhile profession.
