Experiences and Insights on the JIPMER MBBS Exam of 2017

In 2017, the day-to-day-examines at JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) was a blend of memorable moments and challenges. Let me take a moment to share my insights and experiences on how it went and what one should expect in such competitive medical entrance exams.

Biological Section: This was arguably the easiest part of the exam. The questions were mostly direct and focused on the NCERT books. However, some questions were slightly out of NCERT, which made them a bit challenging. Given the nature of the exam, with no negative marking, one should aim to attempt all 200 questions possible. In 2017, I managed to score around 55 correct answers in this section.

Chemistry: The chemistry section, particularly biochemistry, was a mix of biochemistry and general chemistry. The focus was on topics like biomolecules and their structures, making it a bit tougher for students who had not delved deeply into these areas. While the organic chemistry questions were reasonably easy, the numerical questions required quicker calculations. Not having a calculator made these questions a bit tricky.

Physics: Physics was calculative and required a strong grasp of the concepts. From thermodynamics and optics to semiconductor physics and mechanics, the questions were scattered across various topics. The good news was that I managed to solve a few questions I had previously practiced, which gave me a small boost of confidence.

English: Personally, English was tougher than I expected. Not being a native speaker, I found it challenging to identify the correct options or construct my own answers. However, a good command on the language, especially in understanding the context and forming coherent sentences, made it manageable. Students can aim to score about 6–7 questions right in this section.

Logical Reasoning: The logical reasoning section was more of an extension of the English section, with a few distinct questions that required analysis and deduction. It was quite straightforward as compared to the other sections.

The overall difficulty level of the JIPMER MBBS exam in 2017 was moderate. While it was a bit tougher than NEET (National Entrance cum Eligibility Test), it was far easier than AIEEE (All India Engineering and Medical Entrance Examination). Not having preparation resources like state board books and not revising after AIEEE contributed to a slightly challenging experience.

Fingers crossed for the results! Attempting all 200 questions, including some wild guesses, is key in such exams with no negative marking. However, the selection process takes into account a multitude of factors, and one must be aware of their performance in state quota and overall ranking.
