Experience Studying in a Portuguese University: A Unique Academic Journey
When people ask me what it's like to study at a Portuguese university, it's a tough question to answer. I have had the opportunity to study at not just one but two Portuguese universities, and while I have a wealth of experience within the Portuguese academic system, I haven't had the chance to compare it with a non-Portuguese university setting. Thus, my experiences might provide a glimpse into the unique academic journey one can face in Portugal.
Academic Rigor and Curriculum
My studies in Portugal focused primarily on the field of computer science, and it was a blend of rigorous theoretical studies and practical applications. The theoretical aspects covered extensive ground, including complex subjects such as physics, advanced mathematics, and engineering. These foundational subjects provided a robust theoretical background that laid the groundwork for more practical applications.
On the practical side, students like myself were immersed in hands-on exercises, programming, and build projects. I even had the chance to build a very basic calculator using nothing but NAND gates, which was a challenging yet fulfilling experience. These practical components of the curriculum were delivered in smaller, more interactive settings, often with groups of around 20 students. This made the learning process engaging and less daunting.
Classroom and Campus Life
Most of my classes were divided into two parts: a theoretical component where we would gather in large amphitheaters (sala de aula) to listen to the professors, and a practical component where we would work in smaller groups. These smaller classes were more intimate and felt closer to a high school setting, allowing for more direct and personal interactions with the professor and peers. It was interesting to see that even in these smaller groups, there were still some mandatory lectures and demonstrations, which provided a balance between practical application and theoretical knowledge.
The campus itself was a blend of old and new. Many of the buildings, especially those in the university's main campus, were beautiful and historically significant. However, the classrooms and labs were well-equipped, offering all the necessary resources to support the curriculum.
Community and Support
The university community in Portugal is quite warm and supportive. The people I met were generally friendly, welcoming, and accessible. This is an umbrella term for both the administrative staff and the professors. The professors were knowledgeable and passionate about their subjects, which made the learning process enjoyable. However, I did encounter a few professors who seemed to be more interested in other endeavors than academia. These instructors were the exceptions rather than the rule.
Supporting the student body was a clear priority for the university. Whether it was access to IT resources, tutoring services, or guidance for academic and personal challenges, there were many resources available to help students succeed.
Final Thoughts
While I have many positive memories of my time studying in Portugal, it's important to note that I don't have a basis for comparing Portuguese universities to others. Therefore, this account should be taken with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, the experience of studying in a Portuguese university has undoubtedly enriched my education and broadened my horizons.
Conclusion
Portuguese universities offer a unique blend of academic rigor and practical application, complemented by a warm and supportive community. Whether you are a prospective student or curious about the educational landscape in Portugal, studying at a university there provides an opportunity to experience a world-class education in a culturally rich setting.
