Both subjects hold significant appeal, particularly the subject of physics, but I was still uncertain about which to choose. When I explored opportunities in the translation industry, a New York-based translation agency owner emphasized that the demand for “letters from home” was minimal. Instead, the market heavily favors those with proficiency in technical and legal translations, which are more suited to English or other widely spoken languages. In essence, a college degree in Russian is unlikely to translate into practical, high-demand language skills necessary in today’s job market.

Physics Major: A Closer Look

Challenging but Rewarding: A Comprehensive Study: Physics, on the other hand, is a field that stands firmly on the side of rigorous academic and professional training. While no one is inherently "fluent" in physics, studying it requires a considerable amount of intellect and dedication. The fundamental concepts and complex theories taught in physics are essential for understanding advanced scientific principles and contribute significantly to technological and industrial advancements.

Structure and Challenges

Linguistic Challenges: In Russian, there is an added level of linguistic complexity when it comes to verb conjugation. Verbs have imperfective and perfective aspects, each with nuanced meanings. For instance, the verb “gah-vuh-REECH” (to speak – incomplete action imperfective) is entirely different from “skah-ZACH” (to speak – completed action perfective). These variations cannot be deduced from one another, and a significant amount of study is needed to properly distinguish and use them.
