Choosing Chemical Engineering at IIT G, BHU or H: What You Need to Know
Dear prospective students, I understand the confusion that comes with choosing a branch and an institute for your higher education. Like many of you, I faced similar doubts during the counselling period for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). After spending 2 months exploring the Chemical Engineering Department at IIT Guwahati (IIT G), I can provide an unbiased and comprehensive comparison between IIT G, IIT BHU (Banaras Hindu University), and IIT Hamirpur (IIT H).
Academic Excellence
Research Opportunities and Facilities: When it comes to research, both institutions offer valuable opportunities. However, IIT Guwahati stands out as having more advanced and well-explored research facilities. Many experimental instruments are readily available, and you won't need to travel to other IITs for access to them. On the other hand, IIT BHU's research facilities are still under development and are expected to reach the same level as any IIT in the near future. If you are passionate about research, IIT G is the better choice.
Career Prospects
Placement Opportunities: Job placements can be a significant factor in selecting your institution. While both IITs offer genuine career opportunities, IIT Guwahati tends to have a slightly stronger track record in the specific area of chemical engineering. Many alumni from IIT G find jobs in top-tier companies, indicating a higher demand for their skills and qualifications. If a strong placement record is important to you, IIT G is a safer bet.
Infrastructure and Environment
Academic Infrastructure: IIT Guwahati is unmatched in terms of infrastructure. The campus is modern, well-equipped, and conducive to learning. IIT BHU, on the other hand, is still developing its infrastructure, especially for technical facilities. While it might catch up in the near future, it is currently not on par with IITs in this regard.
Co-Curricular Activities and Social Scene
Non-Technical Activities: I did not have the opportunity to explore non-technical activities at IIT Guwahati, but I highly recommend them. The campus life at IIT BHU is vibrant and filled with a wide range of activities, clubs, and societies. If you value a rich co-curricular experience, IIT BHU is the place to be.
Homesickness and Location
Location Considerations: While all three institutions are excellent, your location can play a crucial role in your decision. If Guwahati is near your home, you may prefer to stay closer to your support system. However, if you are willing to move, IIT BHU in Varanasi is an attractive option, especially if your home is in the northern part of India.
Conclusion
Ultimately, both IIT Guwahati and IIT BHU are excellent choices with their own unique strengths. IIT Hamirpur, while also a great institution, may not be as competitive for chemical engineering students. If you are seeking a research-driven environment, strong placement opportunities, and modern infrastructure, IIT Guwahati is the right choice for you. I believe that IIT Guwahati is the best fit for your interests and aspirations.
