Caring for Special Needs Children: A Journey of Love and Challenges
As a dedicated caregiver and advocate for individuals with special needs, I have firsthand experience navigating the unique challenges of raising a special needs child. From sensory issues to communication difficulties, my two children have taught me invaluable lessons in empathy, understanding, and unconditional love.
Challenges of Caring for a Child with ASD
My eldest child, who is diagnosed with Asperger's or High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), has faced a plethora of challenges in her early years. As an ASD diagnosis, she exhibits behaviors such as sensory sensitivity and difficulties in fine motor control, speech, and complex communication. Early in life, it was common for her to scream in non-verbal ways and struggle with basic tasks like bathing, dressing, and leaving the house. These moments were fueled by frustration and sensory overload.
However, as she has grown older, her condition has evolved. Now, she is incredibly bright, sociable, and has a deep love for topics like Pokémon and video games. These small, yet significant, changes have brought immense joy to our family, transforming our home into a place brimming with laughter and endless love.
My youngest child, who is also diagnosed with ASD and has dyspraxia, faced even more immediate challenges. From birth to six years old, he screamed due to his non-verbal state, making even mundane tasks like dressing or taking a bath into battles. Sensory issues such as intolerance to certain noises, bright lights, and fabrics, and difficulty with speech and fine motor control, compounded his struggles. He would self-harm out of frustration and found it difficult to learn sign language because he lacked the attention span required for learning through visual cues. However, today, at eleven years old, he has blossomed into a child who can talk, think, and communicate effectively. His interests in video games and pop culture, such as Pokémon and Fortnite, and his loving nature reflect his growth and transformation.
Dyspraxia: Overcoming Fine Motor and Speech Challenges
Dyspraxia affects fine motor control and, in my youngest, has presented significant difficulties with speech and complex communication. This condition has made it challenging for him to master fine motor skills and express himself verbally. For instance, he would not sign because he needed to look at the caregiver to learn sign language, which proved challenging for a child with limited attention span. Despite these hurdles, he has shown remarkable resilience and a tenacious spirit. Today, he is able to engage in his interests such as Pokémon, marvel, and video games, showcasing his intelligence and passion.
Special Needs in the Family
While the challenges have been significant, my family has grown stronger because of the presence of my children with special needs. My eldest daughter, despite the constant load and slow progression, has become an integral part of our family. Her unique understanding and ability to empathize make her an invaluable member. It is crucial to remember that a person with special needs like my daughter may seem non-verbal, but they can understand far more than we may realize. Therefore, it is essential to be careful with what you say and do.
Another example of a special needs child in my family is my son, who is 48 years old and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, spastic quadriplegia, and mental challenges early in his life. He has also experienced epileptic seizures. His condition has brought about numerous challenges for our family, and it has been difficult to find the right resources and services. However, my son's presence has impacted my family deeply, teaching us valuable lessons in resilience and love. The book I've written and the work I continue to do have come from these experiences, focusing on helping parents find support and resources to care for their children.
Dealing with Complexity
The journey of caring for a special needs child is complex and multifaceted. Services are often not easily accessible, and parents may feel overwhelmed and isolated. My work on the radio, through speaking engagements, and writing articles and books aims to provide support and resources to families facing similar challenges. By sharing the stories of my children and their experiences, I hope to inspire and guide parents on their own journeys.
It is a common misconception that a child with special needs cannot amount to much. On the contrary, these individuals often bring tremendous love and joy to their families. While the progress may be slow, their presence teaches us to have patience and to cherish each moment. Life without them would be incomplete, but life with them is filled with the magic of unconditional love and constant learning.
So, to all those who question whether they have a special needs child, the answer is a resounding yes. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the successes, and cherish every moment with your loved one, for it will undoubtedly create a unique and unforgettable journey.
