ABC of UPTU's Academic Policies: Year Back Criteria New CBCS System

Understanding the criteria for avoiding a year back at Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (formerly UPTU) is crucial for BTech 1st year students. This article delves into the relevant policies and introduces the new Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) implemented starting this academic session.

Year Back Criteria

The passing criteria at UPTU ensures that students meet certain requirements to avoid repassing a year. Typically, these criteria include:

Passing Percentage: Students must pass a minimum percentage of their subjects. A general rule is a minimum of 50% passing subjects to avoid a year back. Attendance: Students are required to attend at least 75% of classes, or risk failing due to poor attendance. Examination Performance: Failing multiple subjects during semester exams can result in a year back. No Re-exams: Students who do not clear subjects in subsequent re-examinations or supplementary exams are subject to a year back. Time Frame: Universities usually have a specified time frame within which students need to clear their backlogs. If not, they may be compelled to repeat the year.

Introducing the CBCS System

Starting this academic session, APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University has introduced the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) to replace the traditional marking system. This new system aims to streamline academic progress and offers several innovative features:

Zero Marks, Minimum Credits: No marks will be awarded in semesters, but students must score a minimum number of credits to move to the next semester. Minimum Credits Requirement: Each student must secure a minimum of 23 credits per semester. If this is not achieved, they will be promoted but required to obtain the remaining credits along with the minimum credits for the following semester. End of Four-Year Process: After four years, students must complete the required minimum credits. If not, they will be given three years to complete their course.

CBCS Structure

The CBCS includes two types of courses:

Core Courses: Compulsory for all students, these courses form the core curriculum. Each semester includes a core course to help students earn a degree. Elective Courses: Students can choose from a pool of papers to complement their core studies. These courses support their chosen discipline of study.

Reform of General Proficiency Marks

UPTU has also decided to end the allocation of general proficiency marks, which were tied to participation in extracurricular activities and maintaining discipline. The move is intended to eliminate favoritism and increase objectivity in the evaluation process.

Implementation Timeline

All colleges affiliated with UPTU have been instructed to complete the process of branch change by August 30. This aligns with the new academic calendar and ensures that there is no disruption in the academic procedure.
